Welcome back to the MSD Ick Dictionary, where we translate bureaucratic vocabulary into plain English. Today's word is Accountability: a concept that appears frequently in letters, forms, reviews, financial assessments, and appointments. Curiously, it seems to operate differently depending on who is being asked to demonstrate it. For clients, accountability means explaining everything, repeatedly, and providing evidence for the evidence. For institutions, it often means requesting more time, locating missing records, and placing the matter under ongoing review. Let's consult the dictionary:
Official Definition:
The obligation to accept responsibility for one's actions.
MSD Translation:
Something clients must demonstrate at all times and institutions rarely encounter in the wild.
Usage:
Client Accountability
- Explain your finances.
- Explain your spending.
- Explain your bank accounts.
- Explain your housing situation.
- Explain your health.
- Explain why the problem happened.
- Explain why you haven't solved it already.
- Explain why you need help.
- Explain why you asked for help.
- Explain why you didn't ask sooner.
Institutional Accountability
- Please hold.
- We are checking our records.
- We cannot locate our records.
- We have requested an extension.
- We require additional time to investigate.
- The matter is under review.
- The review is reviewing a previous review.
- Hopefully somebody else will be holding this portfolio before a response is required.
Example Sentence
"We need you to take accountability for your circumstances."
Translation:
"We will not be taking accountability for ours."
The Cringe
There is a particular kind of bureaucratic magic where accountability becomes something demanded from the person with the least power while disappearing entirely from the people who designed the system.
A client misses an appointment?
Accountability.
A form is submitted late?
Accountability.
Someone has $1,000 in the bank and gets declined support?
Accountability.
A client questions a decision?
Please follow the complaints process.
A client questions several decisions?
Please stop being difficult.
A client questions systemic issues affecting their financial wellbeing?
Interesting. We appear to have upgraded you to "activist".
A system produces the same bad outcome repeatedly for thousands of people?
Unexpected circumstances and operational constraints.
The Accountability Paradox
Citizens are expected to account for every dollar, every decision, every bank balance, every asset, every appointment, and every mistake.
Institutions, meanwhile, often account for problems by announcing:
a review,
- a consultation,
- an investigation,
- an extension,
- or a future update.
- One side is expected to provide evidence.
The other side is expected to provide patience.

🔌 Final Circuit
In theory, accountability means taking responsibility for outcomes.
In practice, it often means the person with the least power gets the most questions while the people with the most power get the most time.
The interesting thing about accountability is that it often changes labels depending on who is asking the questions.
If MSD asks me to explain my finances, that's accountability.
If MSD asks me to explain my housing situation, that's accountability.
If MSD asks me for another form, another document, another bank statement, another explanation, that's accountability.
But if I ask how the system arrived at its decision, where the evidence is, whether the policy is achieving its stated purpose, or why the same problems keep occurring, suddenly I'm not being accountable.
I'm an activist.
Apparently accountability works best when it only travels in one direction.
And that's why accountability has earned its place in the MSD Ick Dictionary.

These are the voyages of Random Circuits, boldly entering the arena of ideas that disrupt, challenge, and transform.
