Going the Extra Mile

Beyond the Coffee—Savoring the Comfort of the Places That Last

· Nannys Corner

There’s something special about finding a café that just gets you—where the coffee is always good, the service always warm, and the connection feels deeper than just grabbing a bite to eat.

I had the chance to take some time for a treat and meet a friend for lunch. We could’ve gone somewhere closer, but this café had a history—not just for me, but for the community. Back when lockdowns had everyone stuck, they found ways to keep going. They did deliveries, let people order coffee by text (which, by the way, was game-changing when I had to rush back to the office). And when other places struggled, they adapted.

Then they moved. And just like with every favorite café, bakery, or fish and chip shop that shifts locations, word got around. My daughter found out first—like she does—and before long, it was one of those whispered, “Oh, did you hear they’ve moved?” conversations that kept their story alive.

Walking in, I was reminded of childhood moments—the way a simple wave could make you feel welcome, just like when I’d visit my grandfather at his business. He always had time for a warm conversation with the local café owner, and I loved watching that exchange—two people genuinely appreciating each other’s presence.

That same feeling was here. The food was still great, the service still warm, and even the barista gave me that familiar wave, like Hey, I see you making the effort to be here.

This café is still the star of its own story—busy, thriving, still serving up the same experience that made me want to show up in the first place. And honestly? That’s worth the drive.

Be the Star of Your Own Story

The things we care about—the places, the people, the choices—stick with us. We talk about them, we share them, we keep them going. And sometimes, the best things in life aren’t just around the corner. Sometimes, they’re 20km away, waiting with a good coffee and a familiar smile.
